Spout and cap
Also known as: spout fitment, pouch spout, spout cap, screw cap fitment, pouch fitment
A spout and cap is a plastic fitment sealed into a pouch plus its screw cap, allowing controlled pouring and reclosing.
A spout and cap is the rigid plastic fitment heat-sealed into a flexible pouch together with the cap that screws onto it. It provides the pouring, squeezing and reclosing function of a spouted pouch.
Parts of a spout
- Sealing base, usually boat-shaped, welded between the two pouch films.
- Neck, the channel the product flows through.
- Thread and cap.
- Tamper-evident ring that breaks on first opening.
Choosing the size
Bore diameter follows viscosity: narrow spouts give controlled flow for thin liquids, wider ones are needed for purées, yoghurt and sauces. Confirm the choice by testing with the real product.
Material compatibility
The sealing base must match the pouch's inner layer, PE with PE or PP with PP, or seal strength suffers. Spouts and caps for food must be made from food-contact compliant materials.
Cap options
Standard screw caps, oversized vented caps for children's products to reduce choking risk, child-resistant caps for chemicals, and tap-style closures for large volumes.
Other considerations
Confirm temperature resistance if the product is hot-filled or sterilised. Spout position affects pouring and filling. For recyclable packs, choose a spout and cap from the same polymer family as the pouch; see mono-material packaging.
Frequently asked
What size spout do I need?
It depends on viscosity. Thin liquids suit narrow spouts, while purées and sauces need a wider bore. Test with your actual product to confirm.
Why must the spout material match the pouch?
The spout is heat-sealed to the pouch's inner layer, and only compatible polymers, such as PE to PE, form a strong, leak-tight seal.
