Mono-material packaging
Also known as: mono-material packaging, mono-material pouch, monomaterial, single-material packaging, all-PE pouch, all-PP pouch
Mono-material packaging uses layers from a single polymer family, such as all-PE or all-PP, so the pouch is easier to recycle.
Mono-material packaging means every layer of the pouch comes from the same polymer family. The most common examples are all-PE (PE/PE) and all-PP (PP/PP, such as BOPP/CPP) structures. Because they can be reprocessed as a single material, they are the foundation of recyclable flexible packaging.
How they are built
- PE-based: an oriented PE outer film (MDO-PE or BOPE) for stiffness and print, with a PE sealant.
- PP-based: BOPP or matte BOPP outside, CPP inside, with better heat resistance.
- Barrier: low levels of EVOH, metallisation or thin coatings, generally considered recycling-compatible below certain thresholds.
Trade-offs
All-PE structures have a narrower sealing window because inner and outer layers melt at similar temperatures, so filling machines need careful settings. Gloss and stiffness can differ from PET, foil-level barrier is not always reachable, and PE-based packs are not retortable. Choose zips, valves and spouts from the same polymer family, print the correct recycling code (4 for PE, 5 for PP) and trial the pouch on your own line before switching.
Frequently asked
Can mono-material pouches be used for coffee?
Yes, PE- or PP-based structures with EVOH or metallised barrier are used for coffee, but shelf life should be verified by testing and the valve should be compatible too.
Is mono-material the same as recyclable?
It is the main route to recyclability, but barrier layers, inks and accessories also need to be compatible.
