BRCGS Packaging Materials

Also known as: BRCGS, BRC packaging, BRCGS Packaging Materials, Global Standard for Packaging Materials, BRC IoP

BRCGS Packaging Materials is a GFSI-recognised global standard that audits packaging manufacturers on product safety, hygiene and quality.

BRCGS Packaging Materials, formally the Global Standard for Packaging Materials and formerly known as BRC/IoP, is a certification standard for packaging manufacturers. It is recognised by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).

Why it matters

Food brands, especially those supplying major retailers, often require GFSI-recognised certification from packaging suppliers. BRCGS shows, through an independent audit, that a converter systematically manages contamination risk, hygiene, traceability and product legality.

What it covers

  • Senior management commitment and product safety culture
  • Hazard and risk analysis for physical, chemical and biological contamination
  • Site standards: foreign body control, glass and brittle plastics, pest control, cleaning
  • Product control, including food contact compliance and migration
  • Traceability, recall and incident management
  • Print and artwork control to prevent wrong or mixed packaging

Audits and grades

Audits are carried out by approved certification bodies, and sites receive a grade (typically AA to D) based on the number and severity of non-conformities, with an unannounced audit option. When assessing a supplier, check the certificate scope and validity in the public BRCGS directory, and still ask for product-specific compliance documents. FSSC 22000 serves a similar purpose.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between BRCGS and ISO 9001?

ISO 9001 is a general quality management standard, while BRCGS Packaging focuses specifically on product safety, hygiene and legality for packaging.

What does a BRCGS grade AA mean?

It is the highest grade, awarded when an audit finds very few minor non-conformities and no major or critical ones.
