ISO 9001

Also known as: ISO 9001, quality management system, QMS, ISO 9001 certification, ISO quality standard

ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management systems, focused on consistently meeting customer needs and continual improvement.

ISO 9001 is the International Organization for Standardization's standard for quality management systems (QMS). It applies to organisations of any size in any sector and is one of the most widely used management system standards in the world.

What it does

ISO 9001 looks at how the system that makes a product is managed, not at the product itself. It aims for consistent fulfilment of customer requirements, controlled processes, recorded and corrected errors, and continual improvement. For a packaging converter this means printing the right artwork, meeting dimensional specs, tracking orders and handling complaints systematically.

Key principles

Customer focus, a process approach, risk-based thinking, evidence-based decisions, continual improvement through Plan-Do-Check-Act, leadership and staff engagement.

Certification

ISO publishes the standard but does not issue certificates. Accredited certification bodies audit and certify; certificates are usually valid for three years with annual surveillance audits.

For packaging buyers

ISO 9001 shows an organised, traceable way of working, but it does not cover food safety hygiene or food contact compliance. For food packaging it is usually considered alongside BRCGS Packaging or FSSC 22000. Always check certificate scope, validity and accreditation.

Frequently asked

Does ISO issue ISO 9001 certificates?

No. ISO publishes the standard; independent, accredited certification bodies carry out audits and issue certificates.

Is ISO 9001 specific to packaging?

No, it is a generic quality management standard that can be applied in any industry.
