Number of designs (SKUs)

Also known as: SKU count, design variants, number of artworks, flavour variants

Number of designs is how many different artworks (flavours, sizes or SKUs) are printed in one order; it strongly affects cost.

The number of designs is how many different artworks an order contains. Each flavour, size, variety or language version is usually a separate SKU and a separate design.

Why it affects price

In flexo and gravure, every design needs its own plates or cylinders, and every changeover stops the press for set-up and creates waste. So 30,000 pouches in one design usually cost less than 10,000 each in three designs.

Link to MOQ

Suppliers may set the minimum order quantity per design or per order. Ask which applies.

Ways to save

  • Keep background, logo and main graphics common, and change only one colour band and the black text between variants.
  • Put variant-specific information (ingredients, weight, barcode) on a single black layer.
  • For very small variants, use a common printed pouch plus a label.
  • Consider digital printing for many SKUs in small quantities.

Rollstock

Each design is usually wound on separate reels, so clear reel labelling helps avoid loading the wrong film on the filling line. Always list quantities per design when requesting quotes.

Frequently asked

Can I combine several flavours in one order?

Usually yes, but check whether the minimum quantity applies per design or per order.

Why do more designs raise the unit price?

Each design adds plates or cylinders, set-up time and waste, spread over fewer pieces.
