Digital printing
Also known as: digital packaging print, plateless printing, short-run printing
Digital printing prints artwork straight from the file onto film with no plates or cylinders, ideal for short runs and many designs.
Digital printing prints packaging artwork directly from the file, with no plates or engraved cylinders. In flexible packaging it is usually done on liquid-toner electrophotographic or inkjet presses.
When it makes sense
Because there is no plate or cylinder cost, short runs of a few hundred or a few thousand pouches become affordable. It suits start-up brands, market tests, seasonal editions and companies with many SKUs in small quantities. Variable data such as serial numbers or personalised names can also be printed.
Limitations
Unit cost stays relatively flat, so on larger volumes flexo or gravure becomes cheaper. Print width is limited by the press, and some Pantone shades or metallic effects may fall outside the digital colour gamut.
Compare total cost for the quantity you actually need, not just the unit price: five SKUs of 500 pieces each usually favour digital, while tens of thousands of one design usually do not.
Tip
Many brands start digital and move to conventional printing once sales settle. Expect slight colour differences when switching and request a printed proof if brand colour is critical.
Frequently asked
What is the minimum order for digitally printed pouches?
It is typically much lower than for flexo or gravure, sometimes a few hundred pieces, but it depends on pouch type and supplier.
Will colours match when I move from digital to gravure?
They can be brought close, but some difference is normal because the processes and inks differ. A colour proof helps manage expectations.
