Spot varnish (selective varnish)

Spot varnish (selective varnish) means applying varnish only to selected parts of the design instead of the whole surface. On flexible packaging the common effect is a matte background with glossy logos or images, or the reverse.

How it works

The varnish areas are drawn as a separate layer and printed from their own plate or cylinder. Often matte varnish is printed over a glossy outer film, leaving the unvarnished areas shiny.

Why use it

It draws the eye to the brand name, logo or product photo, adds depth as light hits the pack at different angles, and gives a premium feel without adding colours. It works especially well on wide front panels such as flat-bottom pouches and doypacks.

Design tips

• Set the varnish as a separate spot colour layer with solid vector shapes.
• Avoid hairlines and tiny text; varnish must align with the print, and registration has tolerances.
• Keep varnish away from seal areas.
• Use it sparingly so the highlight stays effective.

Ask your converter for a printed sample, as the strength of the matte-gloss contrast is hard to judge on screen.
