Sample
Also known as: pouch sample, packaging sample, prototype, trial sample, stock sample
A sample is an example pouch used before production to test size, material, filling and handling performance.
A sample is an example pouch used to check size, material, appearance and performance before committing to a production run.
Types of sample
- Stock samples: existing sizes and materials, the quickest way to feel formats and volumes.
- Blank custom samples: unprinted pouches in your chosen dimensions to test fit.
- Printed samples: often produced digitally to check colour and layout.
- Production samples: taken from the run for approval or archive.
What to test
Does your target weight fit with headspace for sealing? Do your sealer and the zipper work well? Does the pouch stand or form properly? Is the material compatible with oily, acidic or aromatic products over time? On automatic lines, trial the pouches or sample rollstock on your own machine.
Good to know
Stock samples may differ in structure from your final pouch, and digital print colours may differ slightly from flexo or gravure. Longer tests such as shelf-life checks need time in your plan.
Tips
Tell the supplier your product, fill weight and filling method, keep the approved sample as a reference, and ask about sample and shipping costs.
