Microwavable packaging
Also known as: microwavable pouch, microwave safe packaging, steam pouch, microwave steam bag, ready meal pouch
Microwavable packaging is designed, in materials and construction, so food can be heated safely in a microwave oven inside its pack.
Microwavable packaging lets consumers heat food in a microwave oven without removing it from the pack. It is used for ready meals, rice, vegetables, soups and microwave popcorn.
What makes a pack microwavable
- No metal layers: aluminium foil and metallised films reflect microwaves and can cause arcing, except for specially engineered susceptors such as in popcorn bags.
- Heat resistance: steam can push inner surfaces above 100 °C and fatty foods can get hotter still, so heat-resistant materials such as CPP and PET are common.
- Food contact at temperature: heating increases migration, so compliance must cover the heating conditions.
Venting steam
Steam builds pressure inside a closed pouch. Self-venting valves or channels, tear notches opened before heating, and peelable seals let it escape safely, and they also allow food to steam-cook in its own moisture.
Practical points
Without metal, barrier may be lower, so EVOH or clear barrier coatings may be needed for longer shelf life. Print clear heating instructions and consider a cool-touch grip area. Share product type, fat content, portion size and heating time with your converter, and test in microwaves of different power levels before launch.
Frequently asked
Can metallised pouches go in the microwave?
Generally no. Metal layers can block heating and cause sparks, so microwavable pouches avoid them unless specially designed.
How do steam pouches work?
They have a vent or valve that opens when steam pressure builds, releasing excess steam while the food cooks in its own moisture.
