Retort pouch
Also known as: retortable pouch, sterilisable pouch, autoclavable pouch, ready meal pouch, retort packaging
A retort pouch is a heat-resistant multilayer pouch that can be sterilised under pressure after filling and sealing.
A retort pouch is a flexible pack that can be sterilised in a pressurised retort after it has been filled and sealed. Properly processed, the food can be stored at room temperature for a long time, making the pouch a lightweight alternative to cans and jars.
Construction
Every layer, adhesive and ink must withstand sterilisation temperatures, typically around 120 °C, plus pressure. A common high-barrier build is PET / aluminium foil / OPA / retort-grade CPP; transparent barrier versions are used when the product should be visible or microwaveable. Standard PE sealants are not suitable at these temperatures.
Applications
Ready meals, soups and sauces, rice and pulses, tuna, wet pet food, baby food and emergency rations.
Benefits and cautions
- Much lighter than cans and ships flat.
- The thin profile lets heat reach the core faster, which can shorten process times.
- Product trapped in the seal area can cause leaks or delamination, so filling must be clean.
- Sterilisation parameters must be validated with the actual product by qualified specialists.
- Foil structures cannot go in a microwave.
Frequently asked
What temperature can a retort pouch withstand?
Retort pouches are designed for sterilisation conditions, typically around 120 °C under pressure. The exact limits depend on the structure and should be confirmed with the supplier.
Can retort pouches replace cans?
For many foods, yes. They offer similar shelf stability when correctly processed, while being lighter and easier to open.
