Compostable packaging
Also known as: compostable packaging, compostable pouch, industrially compostable, home compostable, compostable film
Compostable packaging is proven by testing to break down into compost within a set time under composting conditions, leaving no harmful residue.
Compostable packaging is broken down by microorganisms in a composting environment into water, carbon dioxide and biomass within a defined time, without leaving visible or harmful residues. The property must be proven by testing to recognised standards.
Industrial vs home compost
Industrial composting uses high, controlled temperatures and moisture; many materials, including PLA, are designed for it. Home composting is cooler and less predictable, fewer materials qualify and it needs separate certification. Labels should say which applies.
What goes into a compostable pouch
Every component must be compostable: films, sealant, adhesive, inks and any zip or label. Common materials include PLA, cellulose films, PBS or PBAT blends and paper. One incompatible layer, such as foil or conventional PE, makes the whole pack non-compostable.
Limits
- Real-world composting depends on organic waste collection and facilities, which are limited in many areas
- Moisture and oxygen barrier is usually lower than conventional laminates
- The packaging itself can age in warm, humid storage
- Compostable plastics can disrupt plastic recycling streams
Unlike the vague term biodegradable, compostable is defined by conditions and time. Use certified, specific claims, tell consumers where to dispose of the pack, and compare with recyclable mono-material options.
Frequently asked
What happens if a compostable pouch goes to landfill?
Landfills do not provide composting conditions, so it will not break down as intended. The benefit only appears when it reaches composting with organic waste.
Is home compostable better than industrially compostable?
It offers more disposal options, but fewer materials qualify and barrier performance can be more limited.
