Biodegradable
Also known as: biodegradable, biodegradable packaging, biodegradable pouch, oxo-degradable, oxo-biodegradable
Biodegradable means microorganisms can break a material down into water, CO2 and biomass; without stated conditions and timescale, the term says little.
Biodegradable describes a material that microorganisms can break down into water, carbon dioxide (or methane without oxygen) and biomass. Without stating the environment and timescale, however, the word says very little about a pack's real environmental performance.
Why the claim can mislead
Given enough time, almost any organic material degrades. "Biodegradable" does not tell you whether that takes weeks or decades, and soil, seawater, home compost and industrial compost behave very differently. Many environmental claim rules therefore treat vague biodegradability claims as problematic, preferring defined terms such as compostable.
Related terms
- Bio-based: made from renewable sources; bio-based PE, for instance, is not biodegradable.
- Compostable: proven by testing to break down under specified composting conditions within a set time.
PLA is bio-based and industrially compostable, yet it does not disappear quickly if littered.
Oxo-degradable plastics
Conventional plastics with additives that make them fragment under heat and light are sometimes sold as "oxo-biodegradable". They mostly break into small fragments rather than fully biodegrading, can contribute to microplastics and are restricted in some markets, including the EU.
For on-pack claims, prefer verifiable statements such as certified compostability or validated recyclability.
Frequently asked
Can a biodegradable pouch be thrown into nature?
No. Even biodegradable materials can take a very long time to break down in natural environments; always use the indicated waste stream.
How is biodegradable different from compostable?
Biodegradable is general and states no timescale or conditions; compostable means breakdown under specified composting conditions has been proven by standard tests.
