Tear notch
Also known as: tear notch, easy tear notch, tear nick, opening notch, easy-open notch
A tear notch is a small cut in the seal at the edge of a pouch that lets it be torn open by hand without scissors.
A tear notch is a small V-shaped or straight cut in the side seal of a flexible pack. It creates a weak starting point so the consumer can tear the pack open by hand without scissors.
Why it matters
Laminated films are tough, and starting a tear from an intact edge can be surprisingly hard. A notch removes that initial resistance at almost no cost, which is why it appears on sachets, stick packs, snack bags, coffee pouches and cosmetic samples, and above the zipper on resealable pouches.
Types
- V-notch: a triangular cut, the most common form.
- Straight slit: a short cut into the seal.
- Multiple notches along the edge, so users can open at any point.
Getting it right
A notch starts the tear, but the film decides where it goes. Some structures tear crookedly or delaminate; a laser score line can guide the tear straight across. On zippered pouches the notch must sit above the zipper, otherwise the reclose feature is lost. The notch should stay within the seal so it never reaches the product area, and its position must be shown on the dieline. A small printed arrow or scissor icon helps users find it.
Frequently asked
Does a tear notch weaken the seal?
Not if it is placed correctly. The notch is cut only into the seal area and does not reach the product compartment.
Why does a pouch tear unevenly from the notch?
Some film structures do not tear in a straight line. Adding a laser-scored tear line guides the tear across the pack.
