Transparent film
Also known as: transparent film, clear film, clear pouch, see-through packaging film
Transparent film is any light-transmitting plastic film that lets the product show through the pack, such as clear BOPP, PET, CPP, PE or OPA.
Transparent film is the general term for light-transmitting plastic films that let shoppers see the product. Clear grades of BOPP, PET, CPP, PE and OPA, and laminates made from them, all fall under this heading.
Why it matters
For nuts, pasta, pulses, granola, sweets and pet treats, seeing the product sells it. Clear film can cover the whole pouch, or a printed pouch can leave a window unprinted.
How a clear pouch is built
Typically two clear films are laminated, such as PET/PE or BOPP/CPP. The outer film is reverse printed; areas that should be opaque get a white underprint, while the window is simply left free of ink, so windows of any shape cost nothing extra in tooling.
Barrier trade-off
Standard clear films do not block light and have limited oxygen barrier. Light can speed up rancidity and colour fading, shortening shelf life. Where oxygen protection is needed, EVOH or transparent barrier-coated films (such as AlOx or SiOx coatings) keep clarity at a higher cost. For chilled fresh produce, an anti-fog sealant stops condensation from hiding the product.
Frequently asked
Does a clear pouch shorten shelf life?
For light- and oxygen-sensitive products it can, compared with metallised or foil structures. Clear barrier films narrow the gap but do not block light.
Can clear pouches be printed?
Yes. Printing is usually reversed on the inside of the outer film, with a white underprint where opacity is needed.
