Window pouch
Also known as: pouch with window, windowed pouch, clear window bag, see-through window pouch, window stand-up pouch
A window pouch is an otherwise opaque pouch with a clear area that lets shoppers see the product inside.
A window pouch is a mostly opaque pouch, metallised, foil-lined, kraft or white, with a clear area that shows the product inside. Being able to see the contents builds trust and often helps the purchase decision.
How the window is made
In all-film structures the window is simply left unprinted, with no white ink and no metallisation in that zone. With inherently opaque layers such as kraft paper or aluminium foil, the window area is cut out so the clear film beneath shows through. See window for the technical details.
Popular uses
Granola, nuts, dried fruit, pasta, pulses, cookies, sweets, pet treats and loose tea. A window on a kraft pouch pairs natural branding with product visibility.
Trade-offs
The window is often the weakest point in terms of barrier. Removing the metal or foil layer lets in more light, oxygen and moisture, which can affect light-sensitive or oily foods. For long shelf life, use transparent high-barrier films or keep the window small. Dusty products may make the window look dirty, and moist products may fog it, in which case an anti-fog film helps.
Frequently asked
Does a window reduce shelf life?
It can, because the window area usually lacks the metal or foil layer, so more light and oxygen get through. High-barrier clear films or a smaller window reduce the effect.
Can a kraft pouch have a window?
Yes. The window area is cut out of the paper layer so that the clear film underneath remains visible.
