Roasted coffee keeps releasing carbon dioxide for days after roasting. If that gas builds up inside the pouch, the pack swells and the seals are put under stress. A one-way valve lets the gas out without letting air in, which is why it is almost indispensable in coffee packaging.
Barrier: what protects the aroma?
Oxygen, moisture and light are coffee's biggest enemies. For whole beans with a shelf life of a few months, structures with metallised PET are often enough. Ground coffee reacts with air much faster; if you need a long shelf life, an aluminium foil core is the safer choice.
Choosing the format
- Stand-up pouch: Economical for packs of 250 g and below, and stands on its own.
- Flat bottom: Stands like a box for 500 g and 1 kg packs and offers five printable faces.
- Quad seal: Holds its shape under heavy fills thanks to strong corner seals.
Ease of use
Consumers rarely finish a pack in one go. A zipper keeps the coffee fresh after opening, and a tear notch makes opening easy without scissors.
